Avalon, NJ

Well I must say, I had a LOVELY time at the shore this past weekend. Myself and a caravan of girlfriends left D.C. bright and early on Saturday morning and made it to the beach with no trouble at all. Our bachlorette hosted us at a gorgeous and HUGE house that her friend lent her. We started the weekend off with mimosas on the porch and I immediately slipped into relaxed vacation mode.

Avalon is a cute little town. I actually went exploring with my girlfriends to find some cheesy bachlorette wear, and they were too classy for that! The beach was extremely wide and soft, and the locals seemed very friendly. It was not the Jersey Shore I stereotyped in my mind.

Saturday night we danced our butts off to the most amazing cover band, Night in Paris. Everyone couldn't believe how much they sounded like the songs you hear on the radio. I was in heaven! The bride is from Georgetown and we actually ran into a Bachelor party that was also full of Georgetown guys. Unfortunately the one married friend was the guy flirting with all the ladies at the bar. Ugh. I'm still pissed off thinking about it. Have some class dude!

Sunday I woke up up early, after way to little sleep, and went out the porch to lay out and read my book. I was slowly joined by the rest of the girls and we spent our morning sunning and laughing about the night before. It was really a perfect little day.

Jersey Shore

I'm visiting the Jersey Shore for the first time this weekend for a girlfriend's bachlorette party. I'm hoping for some great people watching.

Loss

Today was supposed to a very happy day. Today I was supposed to proudly say to the world, I'm 12 weeks pregnant! But sadly today I am making a different kind of announcement, I had a miscarriage. I don't want to share my story for self pity, or to bring everyone down, but instead it is for my release. As I have been going through this unfortunate journey I have turned to the internet a lot for comfort in other women's stories, and hopefully if someone reads this that has gone through the same thing, or knows someone who has, it will be a little bit of comfort for them.

Zach and I decided that we were going to start trying for kids in April. I went from mellow to completely neurotic about the whole process in about one day haha. I purchased those ovulation sticks which never had a positive reading, and I was convinced that we struck out for our first try. We were definitely not pregnant. Well a couple weeks later, the day I was supposed to start my period, I was also scheduled for dental surgery. Even though I was convinced I was 100% not pregnant, I took a test just in case. Imagine my shock when it was positive! I had always thought I would tell Zach that I was pregnant in a super cute way, but I was just too full of shock to hold it in. I ran over to him right away and we celebrated that special moment.

From that moment on I was living in a new reality. Zach and I spoke of miscarriage, but never really stopped to grasp what that would mean. We knew we weren't supposed to plan to much, but we quickly started strategizing our new life. We properly freaked out about how we were going to handle raising our little one (fun fact, my discounted daycare is $1,700+ a month), and properly got excited for all the good that came with a baby (a New Years Baby!). It was only three weeks, but it seriously felt like a lifetime.

Three days after we silently celebrated Mother's Day, one day before I was supposed to be seven weeks pregnant, and two days before our first doctor's appointment, I was kept awake with really bad cramps. I tried to comfort myself and say it would be okay, but at 4 in the morning I saw blood and I knew the worst was happening. Over the next 12 hours Zach and I went from the hospital to the doctors office for a series of painful and drawn out tests to confirm our worst fears ... I was miscarrying. What I never knew about this, its not a just a painful day in your life, miscarrying is a process that can take weeks. I remember thinking how cruel it was, not only did I have to lose my baby, but I had to be in intense pain too. The physical pain subsided after a couple of days for me, but it was followed by the emotional onslaught of having to go back to the doctors office every week (sitting in a waiting room with beautiful pregnant ladies, and their super cute husbands) for blood work until all my pregnancy hormones went away (four weeks). The emotional pain has gone from soul crushing, to dull and ever-present, but I am pretty sure that is something that Zach and I will always carry with us. Last week I nearly lost it as my Dad opened his Father's Day presents. We were going to give him a framed picture of the ultrasound to announce our pregnancy to the family. I know it will probably always be like that for milestones like these that we never got to experience.

To my family and friends who have been so amazing during this process, thank you, I am very blessed to have you in my life. To those who have experienced this incredible heartbreak, I am so sorry. And to my baby that never got to make it to this world, you will forever be loved.

Creating Serenity

I have been very anxious as of late, which means my attention span at work is about 3.5 seconds. I'm trying to create some calm in order to help me focus, so I cleaned my desk, bought myself a plant and switched my normal Friday treat of Dunkin Donuts for a juice. Small steps people.

Happy Friday the 13th!

Brendan & Drew Say I Do

Last weekend I went to North Carolina with my mother, sister and nephew to throw my darling cousin a bridal shower. I still feel like I am catching up … throwing a shower takes a lot out of you!

Drew was very clear; she wanted no theme, just a low-key shower (bummer for me, I love a good party theme). I think we managed to throw her a very sweet, southern shower that made her happy.

The shower was held at my cousin’s friend's house. Her house is drool worthy. Dark floors, light finishes, impeccably chosen furniture. I felt like I was stepping into Better Homes & Garden. Perfect for a shower indeed! I tried to integrate as many of my personal touches as possible. We got the groom to write 10 things he loves about Drew, and then I printed them on doilies. Those were hung in-between photos of the duo to add to the decor. My aunt, who did my wedding cakes, whipped up a bunch of her delicious desserts for a sweet bar, and we provided lots of southern food for the guests (mini biscuits, pimento cheese sliders, etc.).

I don’t like shower games, but I love to win prizes as a shower guest haha. So I went around with a clipboard and asked each guest their birthday (no year, this is a group of women after all), and had them guess the date of Brendan and Drew’s first date. Finally I asked Drew to pick a number from 1-16 (the number of people on the clipboard). Before the gifts were open we awarded a prize to the person who had a birthday closest to the wedding, the person who guessed the date closest to the couples first date, and the person on the list who corresponded with the number Drew picked. Fast, easy, and it made the guests happy!

Next up … bachelorette party!

Summer Running

We have now reached the part of the year when it is absolutely perfect for running. The sun is risen for the entire run, and I can rock a cute running tank top with out being too cold or over heated. I want to capitalize on these beautiful conditions and keep motivated with my running throughout the summer, so I made a new play list. This is a little more dancey than I am used to, but so far it is working out just fine. Here's my 30 minutes of running, and yes I realize its a little dated!

Day at the Zoo

I joined my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew for an afternoon at the National Zoo on Saturday. I haven't been to the Zoo in almost five years, and it was an absolutely gorgeous day for it. Grey was more into the people watching than the animal watching, but we did get some good action. We saw the elephants, a beautiful lion, two baby tiger as the were trying to catch a duck in their little river bed, and some creepy looking reptiles. The highlight of the trip however, was when Grey had his first carousel ride. Janet plopped him on the bald eagle (not the cutest animal, but the most patriotic), and when the ride got going you could tell he was like "Woah." It was really cute.
